The poem of the mind in the act of finding What will suffice. It has not always had To find: the scene was set; it repeated what Was in the Script. Then the theater was changed To something else. Its past was a souvenir. It has to be living, to learn the speech of the place, It has to face the men of the time and meet The women of the time. It has to think about war And it has to find what will suffice. It has To construct a new stage. It has to be on that stage And, like an insatiable actor, slowly and With meditation, speak words that in the ear, In the delicatest ear of the mind, repeat, Exactly, that which it wants to hear, at the sound Of which, an invisible audience listens, Not to the play, but to itself, expressed In an emotion as of two people, as of two Emotions being one. The actor is A metaphysician in the dark, twanging An instrument, twanging a wiry string that gives Sounds passing through sudden rightness, wholly Containing the mind, below which it cannot descend, Beyond which it has no will to rise. Poema de la mente en el acto en que encuentra con qué le alcance. No siempre tuvo que encontrarlo: la escena estaba preparada; repetía lo que estaba en el texto. Luego trocaron el teatro en alguna otra cosa. Su pasado fue un recuerdo. Ha de estar en la vida, para aprender el habla del lugar. Ha de encararse a los hombres del tiempo y conocer a las mujeres del tiempo. Ha de pensar sobre la guerra y ha de encontrar con qué le alcance. Ha de levantar un nuevo tablado. En ese tablado ha de estar y, como actor insaciable, lentamente y meditando, decir palabras que al oído, al delicadísimo oído de la mente, repitan exactamente aquello que desea oír; a cuyo sonido atiende un invisible auditorio, no a la función, sino a él, expresado en sentimiento como de dos personas, como de dos sentimientos que se aúnan. El actor es un metafísico en la oscuridad, tañendo un instrumento, tañendo una cuerda de alambre que emite sonidos que pasan por súbitos aciertos, que contienen entera la mente; por debajo no puede descender, por encima no pretende elevarse. Tiene que ser el hallazgo que una satisfacción, y puede ser el de un hombre que patina, una mujer que baila, una mujer que se peina. El poema del acto de la mente.
